> “MURDER IN THE AIR”

INT. THEATRE - NIGHT

TAMPA VALLEY, a populous metropolis in California. Hundreds flock into BURGESSON THEATRE and take their seats in front of the stage.

LUNA STARLIGHT (VOICE OVER)

It was the final performance. Tampa Valley. It used to always be like this: The bright lights, the cheering crowd. People flocked from every corner of the world.

Crowds packed in front of the dim curtains. It's a closed-off world. The people inside of it like to keep it so.

LUNA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

(rising bitterness)

Everyone is so elegant, clothed in their silk gowns and tailored suits, with pearls dancing around their skin. They all with flair, their hands above their waist as they wave it back and froth to their “fellow.” So carefree.

Two feet -- a stunning pair of red high heels, and ragged tennis shoes. They shuffle back and forth.

LUNA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

(intimate)

Are you ready?

The OTHER MAN [tennis shoes] taps his foot repeatedly. It THUMPS loudly on the wood floor.

SHIVA STARLIGHT

(choking with anxiety)

No, no. I'm not. I can't do this.

Luna nudges Shiva, getting him to turn right round. She squeezes his hand.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Your other performances were just beautiful.

SHIVA STARLIGHT

But this is your hometown. There's not a single soul who's not here to see you.

(takes a moment to emphasis the massive crowd)

And if I mess up...

LUNA STARLIGHT

Do you think you'll mess up?

SHIVA STARLIGHT

(pause)

Yes.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Then, you will. “I think therefore I am.”

(leans in, softer voice)

You can do this.

Luna squeezes Shiva's hands tighter. A perfect couple. BEAUTIFUL. INNOCENT. ROMANTIC. AT THE FRONT: An announcer runs up to the stage. The crowd quiets down. The BACK LIGHTS shut off and the SPOTLIGHT highlights the announcer.

ANNOUNCER

(rising intensity)

Ladies and gentlemen, it's been over a decade since the wonderful Tampa Valley has seen a rising star. But wait no longer. Tonight, I present to the thrilling sensation, “Murder in the Air,” featuring the homegrown talent, the beautiful, the amazing, LUNA STARLIGHT!

The crowd erupts into flames. The red curtains falls as the spotlight follows the entrance of our chosen one.

LUNA STARLIGHT (VOICE OVER)

Every second of that night was as a dream. Not for one moment did the crowd lose its fire. Act by act, it made my first theater act look like my best.

A loud cheer rings through Luna's mind.

LUNA STARLIGHT (VOICE OVER)

Then came the final scene.

The spotlight readjusts. Luna and Shiva stand on the center stage, staring in one another. Shiva nervously shifts on the stage, not daring to look in his beloved in the eyes. Is he acting? The crowd hushes down, on the edge of their seats.

LUNA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

What did you want to tell me all the way out here?

SHIVA STARLIGHT

Something very important. ...You probably have moved on, found the one for you, and pushed me out your memory, but...

SHIVA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

(inhales)

These last few months for me have been chaotic. Every day, a new problem. And I couldn't face my problems. It wasn't until I looked at you again, I figured out why.

Shiva fights with every last breath to let the words running loose in his minds out. UNTIL FINALLY...

SHIVA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

I love you, Emily! I love you! I know I was stupid, but I'm sorry. For all the moments I wasn't there for you, I'm sorry.

The audience softly gasps. Luna flutters her eyes. She leans in and places her delicate hands on Shiva's chest.

LUNA STARLIGHT

I never moved on. And even if I did, how would I forget you.

(beat)

I love you, too.

The two lean in for a kiss.

LUNA STARLIGHT (VOICE OVER)

It was there that night became most unforgettable day in my life.

GUN SHOTS FIRE! BODY DROPS TO THE FLOOR!

LUNA STARLIGHT (PRE-LAP)

For all the wrong reasons.

CUT TO:

INT. LUNA'S HOUSE -- BEDROOM

Luna leaps from her bed, panting and covered in sweat. An ALARM CLOCK... ringing and ringing and ringing.

**SUPER TEXT: **

“HER NAME WAS LUNA” - EPISODE ONE

It is still hours before sunrise. Luna looks out the window.

LUNA STARLIGHT (VOICE OVER)

(with guilt)

Three days in a row?

> “NEW RECRUIT”

EXT. RED BANKS ROAD - MORNING

Dark clouds from a previous session of rain pass over. The ground is still wet and swampy. A troop of POLICE OFFICERS, dressed in long, standard-issue, coats, stand outside a towering TECH COMPANY building. Behind them, strings of yellow “DO NOT CROSS” tape is lined up around the sidewalk. Luna sits in the driver's seat, lost in a trance. She looks down at the pedal with her foot above.

LUNA STARLIGHT (VOICE OVER)

I thought I had gotten over it, but... I can't seem to drown out the past.

Luna lifts her foot and drifts if over the GAS PEDAL.

STERLING SMITH

(in the background of Luna's thoughts)

Luna. Luna. Luna!

Luna break her motion of thought. She sees the sleep-deprived DETECTIVE STERLING SMITH leaning on her window.

STERLING SMITH (CONT'D)

Did you hear a single thing I said?

Riddled. Luna plays it cool.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Yeah. Just tell me where to go.

STERLING SMITH

Are you really an actress?

(beat)

He upped it; $500,000. Get down to the national bank and meet back in five minutes.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Anything else?

STERLING SMITH

Try not to die.

Luna's car storms off. FOLLOW Sterling Smith, waiting outside the tower. He grabs a phone from on the officer.

STERLING SMITH (CONT'D)

This is the Tampa Valley Police. Again. We'll get your money soon. Let the hostages go.

CRIMINAL (VOICE OVER)

Money comes first.

STERLING SMITH

Son of a..

Sterling takes a peering look up the tower, slowly counts the floors in his head and stops when he gets around 12. A gray smudge across the window.

OFFICER #1

Sterling, is there a way we can get the hostages out without giving him the money.

STERLING SMITH

They're too high up. He'll definitely notice. The chief might not like it, but unfortunately, we've got hand over the money.

OFFICER #1

I understand, sir. It's a shame, but I understand.

A blaring police car pulls up to the sidewalk. The door flings open and out comes Luna.

STERLING SMITH

Don't worry. That doesn't mean he gets to keep the money.

(signals)

Send Lance inside and tell him: “He doesn't hand the money until everyone gets out.”

(on the call)

We got your money. Keep your end of the deal.

White-collared, formally dressed workers exit the building and the police escort them. Sterling turns his attention back to the black smudge on the window. It's moved.

LUNA STARLIGHT

We've got them all. All 25 of them. What's next?

STERLING SMITH

Nothing. We're done.

LUNA STARLIGHT

(flabbergasted)

What about the guy? Are we going to let him run away?

STERLING SMITH

(puts on his coat)

Don't worry about him. I send a sergeant and his team out the back.

Sure enough, seconds later, the armed criminal squeezes through crowd, tied up in handcuffs.

CRIMINAL

You son of-

OFFICER #1

Move it!

He gets pushed into the back of a van and taken to the police station.

LUNA STARLIGHT

How did you know that's where he came from?

STERLING SMITH

When you leave a foot large gap on the wall, it's not hard. By the way...

Sterling reaches for something in his pocket and hands Luna a pair of tickets. They are labeled “TAMPA WORLD ALL DAY PASS.”

LUNA STARLIGHT

Amusement park tickets?

STERLING SMITH

My sister came over for the weekend. I'm too busy to go, so you can use them. I'm sure Tampa World is as fun as I remember.

LUNA STARLIGHT

I know what Tampa World was like, thank you. I lived here for all my life. Are your sure that's the only reason?

STERLING SMITH

That. And so you don't kill yourself.

LUNA STARLIGHT

(taken aback)

What gave you that idea?

STERLING SMITH

You were thinking it.

Sterling waves her off and heads to his car. Luna glosses at the tickets, rubbing her fingers against the paper to cover all the words except “live.”

LUNA STARLIGHT (VOICE OVER)

Do I even have the courage to do that?

INT. TAMPA VALLEY POLICE MAIN STATION - DAY

The police station is packed: diligent officers. The “clitter-clatter” of low-budget keyboards -- it rattles like broken garbage. Sterling enters the building, holding his head, dealing with a scorching headache. The receptionist, VANESSA DARTH -- a wide-eyed girl with a stretching smile -- signals for Sterling's attention. She sits by the front desk, looking up from her desktop.

VANESSA DARTH

Good morning, Mr. Sterling.

(notices)

You look awful. You want coffee? No, you want coffee. I'll make some for you. Or are you tea kind of guy? I got some herbal tea--

STERLING SMITH

Is Dad available?

Vanessa looks over at the screen.

VANESSA DARTH

He will be. He talking with the city council right now. You know, the monthly logistics talk. I think he'll be done in five.

WHAM! The door flings open. Luna runs up to the reception desk with a widening smile.

LUNA STARLIGHT

(exploding with excitement)

There's my favorite receptionist! How ya' doing Vanessa?

VANESSA DARTH

(matching her excitement)

Absolutely wonderful! My birthday's coming up in two weeks.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Two weeks? Come on. You know I need more time than that. How else am I supposed to get you a good gift?

VANESSA DARTH

That's alright, Ms. Starlight. There's no need for that.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Why not? You're turning sixteen. That's a big deal. When I turned sixteen, I had a massive party.

Sterling waves her off.

STERLING SMITH

Didn't you have a quinceañera? That's supposed to be big.

Luna eyes shame Sterling as if the spirits of all her ancestors are looking down upon the scene. Ancestral shame.

LUNA STARLIGHT

A quinceañera is when your fifteen. It's literally in the name, quince. God, you're so uneducated. I was talking a Sweet Sixteen.

STERLING SMITH

(under his breath)

Oh my god.

Luna turns her attention back to Vanessa, leaning over her table.

LUNA STARLIGHT

If not fully a Sweet Sixteen, we still need to throw a big party. Sixteen is a big age.

STERLING SMITH

Don't you have work to be doing?

LUNA STARLIGHT

Oh. Filing the report? Can't Lance do it? You always make me do it.

STERLING SMITH

No, Lance has his own job, and unlike you, he actually bothers to do it.

LUNA STARLIGHT

See, there's the key word: bothers. Filing a report is a bother.

STERLING SMITH

Just finish your work before I make you stay overtime.

(to Vanessa)

Is Dad finished yet?

VANESSA DARTH

He cleared up his schedule. You can check.

Luna waves him Sterling off, sarcastically, and then turns to Vanessa.

LUNA STARLIGHT

What a downer. Everyday, I fear aging will make me closer to him.

Vanessa glances up from her keyboard.

VANESSA DARTH

Miss Starlight? You do know that Mr. Sterling is younger than you, right? Like, a lot younger.

LUNA STARLIGHT

(scoffs)

What? No. He acts at least 40.

VANESSA DARTH

He's 22.

LUNA STARLIGHT

22? Like, fresh out of college 22? Come on, any girl would think he's a day away from retirement.

Vanessa almost chuckles.

LUNA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

Wow. I did not think he was younger than me.

LUNA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

(light bulb)

That's new information to annoy him with.

As Luna leaves, the door swings open once again to reveal a new character. A skimpy male wearing a black bomber jacket and cargo pants, looking like he just woke up in the shower, stands at the front of door puzzled. Vanessa takes notice of the innocent boy.

VANESSA DARTH

Hello, mister? Can I help you with something?

INDRA SUZUKI

Oh. Hi. Sorry, I'm a bit late. My name is Indra Suzuki and It's my first day here.

INDRA SUZUKI walks over to the counter and hands over a crumpled piece of paper. Despite having a case of first-day panic, he remains calm. Vanessa examines the paper and digs through her computer.

VANESSA DARTH

Indra Suzuki. When did you apply?

INDRA SUZUKI

Three weeks ago. Interview, two weeks ago.

VANESSA DARTH

Than let's have look at your profile. Oh!

INDRA SUZUKI

Is something wrong?

VANESSA DARTH

No... Yes, actually. What position did you apply for?

INDRA SUZUKI

Whatever I could get. Preferably, an officer. Is that not what it says?

VANESSA DARTH

It says Junior Detective, but that's a position you have to be promoted to.

(thinks)

Do you remember who interviewed you?

INDRA SUZUKI

I believe it was the Chief, Mr. Smith.

Vanessa stops in her tracks. She inspects Indra's face, but nothing on it tells a lie.

VANESSA DARTH

You interviewed with the chief?

(Indra nods)

Okay. Wow. That's impressive. Alright, let's your patrol route printed out and then, I'll show you the place.

Vanessa presses print and stands by the slow, antique printer. Indra takes a deep sigh of relief. A rumbling police station. Towering people, all much more experienced, rush past him. A soft ringing.

INDRA SUZUKI

This place is massive.

VANESSA DARTH

It sure is.

INDRA SUZUKI

Uah-Sorry, I didn't see you there.

VANESSA DARTH

No problem. Here's your patrol route. You're on Mr. Sterling's team, so report everything to him.

Vanessa hands him the piece of paper.

VANESSA DARTH (CONT'D)

Let's give you a quick tour. You're currently in the lobby, where visitors report. To your right and left are the main work areas. As a detective, you also report your cases to the registrar weekly for our database. Don't forget this, especially with Mr. Sterling.

Indra's eyes dart back and forth, trying to process the information.

VANESSA DARTH (CONT'D)

Upstairs is more workspace, but I won't go into detail. However, the best spots in this station is upstairs by the windows and the two couches by the chief's office, but my personal favori--

LUNA STARLIGHT

Oh, LAAAAAANCE!

Luna runs up to Lance's cubicle with a big, bold smile. Lance doesn't even bother to make eye contact (it takes too much energy, he says).

LUNA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

--Listen, you and I know both know how much I hate filing reports. That mean Sterling always assigns them to me. Can you do me a small favor and do the report? You where there during the hostage case anyway. I'll buy you lunch if you do. --

VANESSA DARTH

I guess I'll start with her. That is Miss Luna Starlight. The most renowned actor in the world. I've watched every single one of her movies and shows.

INDRA SUZUKI

Wasn't she in that Netflix show: Red Moon? Right? That was a really good show.

VANESSA DARTH

Yes! I love that show! Oh, you and I need to have a watch party!

Indra then realizes something.

INDRA SUZUKI

Wait. If she was an actress, then why is she here?

VANESSA DARTH

You... Don't know?

INDRA SUZUKI

Am I supposed to?

VANESSA DARTH

No, that's alright. I guess I'll tell you the story how I remember. 12 years ago.

INT. BURGESSON THEATRE - NIGHT

We return to the sprawling theatre. Giggles, cheers, and formalities fly across the room. This version of the theatre doesn't start off so wonderful. We already know that happens. We see Luna, a younger version, wrapped in a pearl white dress, on the stage.

VANESSA DARTH (VOICE OVER)

She debuted her first theatre act, a thrilling romance inspired by her own life. The crowd adored her, the theatres were bringing in more money that ever. She became a global star. Burgesson Theatre was the final showing.

The stage is now set with both Luna and Shiva standing, romantically looking into one another's eyes.

INDRA SUZUKI (VOICE OVER)

What was the story like?

VANESSA DARTH (VOICE OVER)

An elegant young girl who made a name for herself in the world of acting. Every wealthy man desired her, but her own eyes thirsted for one in particular. A lower class worker, nothing like the men she could've had. The world despised this love. The stage was set for the final act. The two leaned for the final kiss, but then...

WHAM! GUN SHOTS, SCREAMING! BODY DROPS TO THE FLOOR!

VANESSA DARTH (CONT'D)

Open fire. A man sitting in the first row shot the lead actor. That actor being her husband.

INT. TAMPA VALLEY POLICE MAIN STATION - DAY

Indra takes a massive breath.

INDRA SUZUKI

The play was inspired by her own life?

VANESSA DARTH

(looking at Luna)

That's how she phrases it.

INDRA SUZUKI

I feel like I just downloaded a movie, but in my brain. That's... Tragic.

VANESSA DARTH

It is, but it looks like she's moving on. Or at least trying to.

CRRRREAK. Sterling walks out the Chief's office.

INDRA SUZUKI

Who is he?

VANESSA DARTH

Detective Sterling Smith. The finest we have on this force. And also, your new boss.

Sterling stops.

VANESSA DARTH (CONT'D)

Nice to meet you again, Mr. Sterling. Did your talk with the Chief go well?

STERLING SMITH

As well as it needed to. Who is he?

INDRA SUZUKI

Indra Suzuki. The new detective on your team. Nice to meet you, Mr. Smith.

STERLING SMITH

Mr. Smith is my father. I go by Sterling only.

Indra extends his hand out and Sterling shakes it.

INDRA SUZUKI

Of course. Mr. Sterling. Sorry about that.

VANESSA DARTH

He's on your team now. He's pretty impressive. Already a junior detective.

STERLING SMITH

Dad did mentioned you. He said you're very smart. Lot of potential.

INDRA SUZUKI

(doesn't know how to respond)

I'm flattered to hear that.

VANESSA DARTH

Since you two are now acquainted, I'll leave you alone.

Vanessa finds herself out of the conversation (kind of like me on an average Tuesday).

STERLING SMITH

Do you have your patrol route?

INDRA SUZUKI

Right here.

Sterling inspects the paper.

STERLING SMITH

Alright, follow me.

Indra and Sterling reach the first step, but the rest are blocked with a massive crowd. They're all gathered around Luna, begging for autographs and pictures.

STERLING SMITH (CONT'D)

Do you always have to bring a crowd in front of the station?

LUNA STARLIGHT

It's not my fault they follow me. Besides, they came all this way. This is the least I can do.

STERLING SMITH

No, no. None of this happening right now. Move! Everybody go home. Don't any of you have work to get to?

Sterling pushes through the crowd and filters Luna from her supporters. Disheartened, the crowd boos Sterling before fleeing the scene.

LUNA STARLIGHT

You could've been a little less rude.

STERLING SMITH

It's not my job to be.

LUNA STARLIGHT

I would argue as a public service agent, it is. You should take advice from your elders.

STERLING SMITH

(on the verge of killing Luna)

Luna. This is Indra Suzuki. Indra, this is Luna Starlight. Your patrol routes are identical, so you'll be working together.

LUNA STARLIGHT

A new partner! Oh my. And you look young? What are you? In college?

INDRA SUZUKI

No, I just graduated college. Tampa VIST. But I wouldn't call myself young. I'm 30.

Luna almost chokes.

LUNA STARLIGHT

30? Honey, you look like you turned 18 yesterday.

INDRA SUZUKI

Thank you? You also look very young. I guess.

LUNA STARLIGHT

(about to die from cuteness)

You hear this Sterling?

STERLING SMITH

Just get Indra in the flow of things. If anything happens to him, you are getting 120% of the pain he gets.

Sterling leaves for his car on the other end of the sidewalk.

LUNA STARLIGHT

And what are you doing?

STERLING SMITH

(from afar)

Research.

Sterling gets in the car and takes off.

LUNA STARLIGHT

(rolls her eyes)

Everyone understood that, of course. Okay, let's see this patrol route of yours.

INDRA SUZUKI

Of course. Here.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Oh wow. Sterling wasn't kidding. Alright, let's show what I do.

Luna begins crossing the street and Indra clumsily follows behind.

LUNA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

So, Indra, was it?

INDRA SUZUKI

Yes, Indra Suzuki.

LUNA STARLIGHT

It's a cool name. What does it mean?

INDRA SUZUKI

My sisters said it's the name of a Hindu God. The God of Storm and Thunder, I think.

Luna stops in her tracks. A loud flash plays in her head, following a ringing. She thinks back to that day, those words ringing in her ears: “I love you,” “I love you, too.” The pain of a thousand lifetimes rushes through her.

INDRA SUZUKI (CONT'D)

Luna? Luna!

Indra desperately tugs Luna shoulders. She snaps back to reality (oh, there goes gravity) and clears her head.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Oh. I'm sorry.

LUNA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

(long breath)

I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry about that.

INDRA SUZUKI

No, it's alright. As long as your okay. I don't think I'd hold up if my partner passed out on the first day.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Don't worry. It was just a little... I haven't had good sleep in a while. But forget me. Where were we? Have you ever been to Jerry's Ice Cream?

INDRA SUZUKI

No. I grew up on the outer parts of the city. Downtown is all new to me.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Seriously?

INDRA SUZUKI

Yeah. I've never head of Jerry's Ice Cream.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Screw the patrol. I have got to show you the city.

> “CASE SHIVA”

EXT. BURGESSON THEATRE - DAY

Engines whirring, a black POLICE CAR parks in front of a meek, rundown theatre. Cramped between two newer buildings, the theatre stands tacky with it's mishmash-ed letters on the front sign, flickering LCD lights that emanate a honing buzz, chipped walls and doors, dented steps, and peeling paint. We know this place as BURGESSON THEATRE. A man exits the car: Sterling Smith. He sees an elderly man on the front step swinging his cane back and forth. He glances up in a random direction on the sound of Sterling's footsteps. Possibly blind.

STERLING SMITH

Excuse me, mister. Is the theatre open today?

ELDERLY MAN

Open? The theatre hasn't been open since that poor boy was murdered. Now, it's just a museum. But you probably meant if you go in. You can always go in. Except Tuesdays. The owner never opens the door on Tuesdays.

Sterling was about to lose his mind over the slow response, but he shows his respect.

STERLING SMITH

Thank you.

Sterling nods his head at the man and enters.

INT. BURGESSON THEATRE - DAY

The theatre is sprawling with tourists and visitors alike. Cameras flashing, crowds “oohing” and “aahing. ” The inside is left in much of the same conditions as it was left twelve years ago. Except now, we have posters and signs everywhere displaying timeless information of that night. As if from the roof of the place, an EXTENDED SHOT of Sterling navigating the place. We cross one room into another, one we recognized from LUNA'S FLASHBACK to be the theatre stage. Sterling walks through the aisles and counts exactly four rows. Sterling enters the row and stops about halfway. He runs his long, delicate fingers across the leather seated, woven with cuts and bumps. It is as soft as he remembers it.

STERLING SMITH (VOICE OVER)

The seat I sat in that day. Row 36, Seat 15. I begged my mom for days to let me go this showing.

FLASHBACK CUT: A tiny STERLING SMITH (10) enters the front gates of the theatre. He holds his mother hands We are back in the bright lights and overcrowded glory days of Burgesson Theatre.

STERLING SMITH (VOICE OVER)

As I walked past the lobby, I noticed the actor I always looked up to: Christian Hamilton. Hamilton was the entire reason I developed a love for the theatre. Once I knew he was there, I had to go.

Sterling runs up to Hamilton, but halts.

STERLING SMITH (VOICE OVER)

He was talking with someone. Someone who I wouldn't recognize until later. And then I saw it -- Christian Hamilton handed the man a small pistol.

Kid Sterling watches the gun being handed over and runs back towards his mother. He breaths heavily and cuddles in his mom's arm.

STERLING SMITH (VOICE OVER)

I was incredibly scared, but I think I told myself that it might just be a prop.

Sterling sits on the same leather seat, now much younger and fresh.

STERLING SMITH (VOICE OVER)

But I think even kid me knew that was a lie.

GUN SHOTS FIRE! The smile on Sterling's face drops and conforms into horror. The faint sounds of kid Sterling whimpering and crying fade in. RETURN TO THE PRESENT: Sterling opens his eyes and steps away from the seat. He stares out to the empty stage in front, like a small child stepping foot to a mountain.

STERLING SMITH (VOICE OVER)

I could've called dad or told Mom. But I let it happen. I watch the entire performance knowing it could happen. The blood of Shiva Starlight is on my hands.

VAN BURGESSON

Excuse me.

What the-? Sterling find a shorter man, nicely dressed, adorning a black top hat standing behind him.

STERLING SMITH

Sorry. Was I in the way?

VAN BURGESSON

No, not at all. I just happened to notice you are from the Tampa Valley Police.

The coat, Sterling thinks. He extends his hand.

STERLING SMITH

Detective Sterling Smith.

Burgesson does not accept.

VAN BURGESSON

Ah. The Detective Sterling. It's a pleasure to have you here. I am Mr. Burgesson, the owner of this establishment.

STERLING SMITH

You are the Theo Burgesson?

VAN BURGESSON

No. Theo Burgesson was my father, but he died quite a while back. I took after his business.

STERLING SMITH

I am sorry to hear about your father. I know what it's like to lose a family member.

VAN BURGESSON

There's no need for you to apologize. If you are here, then you must be investigation. Am I right?

STERLING SMITH

Kind of. I am here to find more information about that day, but--

VAN BURGESSON

Yes. That day. The day that is so infamous in this town, that it needs no name. I know exactly what you're talking about.

STERLING SMITH

Then can you help me find more about it?

VAN BURGESSON

I'll try my best, but don't expect much of me. I will ask you something though. Why did the police wait until now?

Sterling looks down in defeat.

STERLING SMITH

About that. I am not actually allowed to investigate this case.

VAN BURGESSON

Why not? It's one of the biggest events that happened to this city.

STERLING SMITH

Much after we caught the shooter, the task force, and much of the world, is convinced there's nothing more to it. The motive: jealousy.

VAN BURGESSON

I do agree. There was quite a bit of jealousy. But -uh, if you want to learn more, you could come to one of our reenactments.

STERLING SMITH

...Reenactments?

VAN BURGESSON

Yes. The news coverage isn't enough. People are dying to know what happened that night. So, we teamed up with real witnesses to create the most accurate depiction.

(pauses, then continues)

Though our main reason was money. You see, as one might expect, the horrific events caused people to shun away our theatre. Now, the only people that bother are tourists. I can't let my father's dream die out here. What do you say, Mr. Sterling? We have a showing this Sunday. I think you should come.

Sterling stands still.

VAN BURGESSON (CONT'D)

Mr. Sterling?

STERLING SMITH

(snaps back)

I'll see what is on my schedule that day. Could I possibly have your contact?

VAN BURGESSON

Of course. Just one moment...

Burgesson takes out a white plain card and a vintage ink pen from his pocket and writes down his number. Sterling takes with precaution.

STERLING SMITH

You just happened to have a pen and paper on you?

VAN BURGESSON

Carry it everywhere I go. Have a nice afternoon, Mr. Sterling.

STERLING SMITH

You too.

Sterling stashes the note card into his pocket and leaves the theatre. The elderly man on the way out stops him again.

ELDERLY MAN

Thank you for visiting. Please do come back soon. Times are tough these days.

STERLING SMITH (PRE-LAP)

Don't worry, mister. I'll be coming back quite a lot.

INT. TAMPA VALLEY POLICE MAIN STATION - DAY

INSIDE THE CHIEF'S OFFICE Inside a dimly lit square OFFICE, perched on the edge of a chair, his jaw clenched, crossed legged, leaning back, an arm on the handle, is Sterling. Across him, a taller version of himself, older, wiser, and more intimidating. COLIN SMITH, father of Sterling, and Chief of Tampa Valley Police Main Station.

COLIN SMITH

Every year, the same question. You know my answer won't change. So, why persist?

STERLING SMITH

I don't find your answer satisfactory.

COLIN SMITH

Then would you like me to have a hundred people tell you.

Sterling, fueled by frustration, rises from his chair.

STERLING SMITH

A Hundred people have told me the same unsatisfactory answer. I have evidence, reasonable evidence. Look at this.

(slams file on table)

Burgesson Theatre claims that after the incident, business died down. But business was rising. Everybody from across the globe -- Canada, China, Germany -- everybody wanted to know what happened at that theatre.

COLIN SMITH

Sterling, get out of my office.

But Sterling continues:

STERLING SMITH

Why would a thriving business suddenly shut down? Because they had something to hide. And they knew if they got too much attention, their secret would be unveiled.

COLIN SMITH

Then why turn the place into a museum. Isn't that popular enough?

STERLING SMITH

Have you actually been inside? That's not a museum. They're telling their sick, twisted version.

COLIN SMITH

(raises his voice)

The story is already is sick and twisted!

STERLING SMITH

That's why you have you let me take the case! I can solve it!

COLIN SMITH

There is no case, Sterling! We caught the shooter 12 years ago and he confessed everything. The case is solved. Now, get out of my office!

STERLING SMITH

Everything?

Sterling pounds the table and lets his head rest in defeat. Colin begins tidying up, signaling the inevitable end of the conversation.

STERLING SMITH (CONT'D)

(resolute)

You know how I told you how I saw everything? That I saw my favorite actor help the killer. I was there.

COLIN SMITH

And do you know how I told you not to not trust that memory so much? You were a scared child. As far as you know, the memory couldn't even be real.

STERLING SMITH

It was real. How can you tell your own son not to trust what he saw?

(lifts head up)

How can you even call yourself a father? Mother would've believed me.

Colin stops abruptly, his back to the camera. He crushes a piece of paper in his hand. Sterling stands his ground, grabbing his coat to leave.

STERLING SMITH (CONT'D)

Why did you accept Luna to the agency? She had no experience being a detective. You weren't her friend nor did you owe her a favor. So, why? You hired her because you knew what happened was more than it appeared. You knew, but you just won't admit it.

COLIN SMITH

(cold)

Sterling. The following words don't come from your father. They come from your boss: leave my office.

Sterling storms out, slamming the door. A framed photo on the wall falls. A serene woman with black bangs and pale skin stares from the shattered image. CLOSE-UP: Colin's brown eyes flicker, a soft tear escaping.

COLIN SMITH (CONT'D)

You were always better at this than me. Please, help me, Nadia.

OUTSIDE THE CHIEF'S OFFICE A hush falls, every officer's eyes fixed on Sterling.

STERLING SMITH

Get back to work.

The room springs back to life. Sterling attempts to leave the station.

VANESSA DARTH

The whole station could hear yelling. Did the meeting go alright, Mr. Sterling?

Sterling stops, his voice steaming.

STERLING SMITH

No. Nothing went alright, but you don't need to know all that. Do one thing for me. Burgesson Theatre has a site, right?

VANESSA DARTH

I believe so. It's some kind of museum now.

STERLING SMITH

Buy two tickets dated this Sunday for their “re-enactment” or whatever they call it.

VANESSA DARTH

Oh, are you going?

STERLING SMITH

No, if I went, he'd find out.

VANESSA DARTH

Whose name do I put the tickets under?

STERLING SMITH

Indra Suzuki... And Luna Starlight.

Vanessa hesitates at her keyboard.

VANESSA DARTH

Are you serious? This Sunday? Like August 27th Sunday? Do you know what this Sunday is for L-

STERLING SMITH

I know what this Sunday is! And I know what I'm doing! So, if you just stop asking me pointless questions and order the damn tickets, that'd save me some fucking time!

The entire police station falls silent. Vanessa twitches, tilting her head in fear. Deep breaths. In... and out.

VANESSA DARTH

Sorry, Mr. Sterling.

Sterling clenches his fist and walks towards Vanessa. He bends down to her level, patting her shoulder.

STERLING SMITH

Vanessa...

(gulps)

I'm sorry. Really sorry. I didn't mean to lash out at you, okay? It's just been a long day for you and me and everyone here.

Silence. A moment of reflection.

STERLING SMITH (CONT'D)

Your birthday's coming up. Do you want a gift?

VANESSA DARTH

No.

STERLING SMITH

Are you sure? I get the best gifts, you know. Name it. Anything you want. No? Here...

Sterling takes out a handful of 20s from his WALLET and places them in Vanessa's hands.

STERLING SMITH (CONT'D)

Take this and buy yourself something nice. Just, can you please get me those tickets. I know you look up to Luna but trust me... Please. This is to help her.

Vanessa takes a deep breath and hugs Sterling.

VANESSA DARTH

Okay. I'll do it. But you have to promise me something.

STERLING SMITH

What?

VANESSA DARTH

You'll come to my birthday party?

Sterling gives a fatherly smile.

STERLING SMITH

(smiles)

I wouldn't want to miss it.

> “TWISTED MEMORIES”

INT. THE LOTUS KITCHEN - DAY

An insanely packed restaurant on the East Side. Wooden and campfire decor, embroidered curtains, handwritten menus and pale tablecloths decorated with arrangements of flowers. RUSH HOUR -- waitress' are carrying two, four, even five plates at a time. Chefs are yelling like an episode of Masterchef. CLOSE on a WAITER serving Luna and Indra.

WAITER

I got two sushi platters, a katsu chicken curry -- hold the soy sauce -- and a Yaki udon. Anything else?

LUNA STARLIGHT

No, thank you.

Each dish rests on large 14 inch plates. Luna and Indra sit at a table by the window side, oak wood and rectangular.

INDRA SUZUKI

Could I could get I fork?

The waitress hands over a fork. Luna gives Indra a questioning look. Indra stares back and realizes.

INDRA SUZUKI (CONT'D)

(shaking head)

No. It's for the cutlets. It's just for the cutlets. I promise.

LUNA STARLIGHT

(chuckles)

Just say you don't know how to use chopsticks. It's not that embarrassing. I'll show you. Here, put your fing-

Luna's cell rings. The contact: Sterling Smith (He's 22?!).

LUNA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

Yello?

Sterling sits on the couch, going through his computer. On his screen: [Burgesson Theatre, 2011], [Burgesson Theatre Bankruptcy], [Shiva Starlight Death], [Marx Starlight].

STERLING SMITH

Are you on patrol?

Indra fiddles around with the chopsticks -- he's making slow progress.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Already showed him around. Just taking a lunch break.

STERLING SMITH

I need you and Indra to clear your schedules on Sunday. There's a job I need done.

LUNA STARLIGHT

For the station?

STERLING SMITH

No, personal.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Wow, you're asking me to do your personal job. Don't you normally do them yourself?

In the kitchen, Sterling stares out the window. An empty neighborhood street.

STERLING SMITH

If I did, Dad would find out. That's why need someone to go undercover.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Playing tricks with your Dad, now? Alright, I'm in. What's the deal?

STERLING SMITH

This Sunday at 12:00, you two will head to Burgesson Theatre.

Silence... RESTAURANT: Luna gulps.

STERLING SMITH (CONT'D)

I had Vanessa book two tickets for a re-enactment the theatre set up. At 10:30 tomorrow morning, you will get an email with them. Under no circumstances are you to discuss this information with anyone, especially Dad. If he asks you, tell him you're taking a mental day off.

LUNA STARLIGHT

But do you have any idea what...

Luna clenches her forehead and rests her head down on the table. Deep exhale.

LUNA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

Just pick someone else. I'll file all my reports. Hell, I'll do their reports for that day, too. Just pick someone else-

STERLING SMITH

No. It must be you, Luna. No one has a better record of that night than you.

LUNA STARLIGHT

But why... Why do this to me? I'll do anything else. Any order you have.

STERLING SMITH

Why did you become a detective? Was it to run away from the world of acting? To leave your past behind?

LUNA STARLIGHT

I... I became one to...

Luna chokes on her words.

STERLING SMITH

You did it because you want to know who killed your husband.

STERLING SMITH (CONT'D)

You weren't satisfied with the news So, for the sake your husband, please trust me, Luna. You can't run from your past.

LUNA STARLIGHT

And what would you know about that?

STERLING'S HOUSE: Sterling starres at a portrait of his mother and father holding a BABY STERLING in their arms.

STERLING SMITH

A lot. But then again... Comparing your case to mine... We fight for different reasons.

(pause)

If you don't want to do this case, then I won't force you.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Call me in a bit. I'll tell you my decision then.

Luna hangs up. Sterling leans back on the bed in guilt.

STERLING SMITH

Why did I do that?

AT THE RESTUARANT: Luna sits with a conflicted face. THE REFLECTION OF HER ON THE WINDOW: A young Luna, smiling and confident, wearing a pale red dress.

INDRA SUZUKI

Is everything okay? Who called? You seemed really nervous.

LUNA STARLIGHT

It was Sterling. He wanted me to do something, but...

(turns her head)

I don't think I can do it.

INDRA SUZUKI

Why not?

LUNA STARLIGHT

Maybe I'll mess up. I'll get frightened and ruin the whole case.

Pause.

INDRA SUZUKI

Do you think you'll you fail?

LUNA STARLIGHT

What?

INDRA SUZUKI

Do you think you'll mess up?

LUNA STARLIGHT

...Maybe.

INDRA SUZUKI

Then maybe you will. My sister told me that people tell themselves happy or encouraging thoughts because that's how they want to feel. The opposite is also true. If you think negative thoughts, you'll become those ideas. It's cheesy and cliche, but it's the best motivation I could come up with.

Indra looks up to see tears flowing down Luna's cheeks.

LUNA STARLIGHT

(mouths)

Shiva?

INDRA SUZUKI

Woah, woah. Luna. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you cry.

Then, Luna starts laughing.

LUNA STARLIGHT

No, it's alright. Their happy tears.

(wipes her tears)

Thank you, Indra.

INDRA SUZUKI

Your welcome? You're alright though, right?

LUNA STARLIGHT

Yeah, I am. Where were we? Right, I was going to show how to use chopsticks.

INDRA SUZUKI

I kind of figured out how to use them during your call. See. Pretty cool right.

Indra picks up his chopsticks and plays with them in the air.

LUNA STARLIGHT (VOICE OVER)

Why would I run from the past? The past is coming to me.

INT. TAMPA VALLEY POLICE MAIN STATION - DAY

LATE IN THE MORNING: Luna and Indra are in front of the reception.

VANESSA DARTH

Here's your I.D, badge, and coat. Do not ever lose these or you won't hear the end of it. You coat, though. Do whatever you want.

INDRA SUZUKI

Do I have to wear one? What if it gets hot in the summer?

VANESSA DARTH

No one enforces you to, but you didn't hear that from me.

(re; Luna)

Have you got your tickets?

Luna flashes her phone.

LUNA STARLIGHT

12 P.M sharp. Did you check me out for today?

VANESSA DARTH

I did. Unfortunately, you had many sick days, you only get from 10:30 to 3:00. The tour ends at 2:30 and Sterling wanted you back on patrol the minute your break ends.

LUNA STARLIGHT

How many sick days have I taken?

VANESSA DARTH

15 in the last month.

Luna chokes.

LUNA STARLIGHT

15!

CLOSE on Colin Smith entering scene.

COLIN SMITH

What's with this early morning gathering?

VANESSA DARTH

Good morning, Mr. Smith. It's always nice to see you roaming about.

COLIN SMITH

Good morning to you too.

(re; Luna)

Didn't your shift start an hour ago?

LUNA STARLIGHT

I'm taking the day off. Most of it, actually. You know, with it being the an-

COLIN SMITH

My apologies. Take your day off.

(beat)

Taking a partner with you?

LUNA STARLIGHT

Lance didn't want to come to Tampa World, so I improvised.

COLIN SMITH

I see. Indra, right?

INDRA SUZUKI

Yes, Chief.

COLIN SMITH

A word of advice. Don't take anything my son says too seriously. Especially, when he mentions Burgesson Theatre. It's usually never a good sign.

Indra freezes, looks over at Luna for an answer.

INDRA SUZUKI

(nods)

I'll try that, sir.

MATCH CUT TO:

EXT. BURGESSON THEATRE - DAY

INDRA SUZUKI

I feel bad for saying that.

We are in front of Burgesson Theatre once again. The streets are empty.

LUNA STARLIGHT

You get used to it. How do I look? Do you think they'll recognize me?

Luna's wearing baggy street clothes: black cargo pants and an oversized hoodie. All her hair is tucked underneath a cap.

INDRA SUZUKI

Your face hasn't changed, but someone would have to look incredibly hard to recognize you. No one puts that much effort nowadays though.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Alright, then. Deep breaths. Deep breaths, Luna.

Luna takes a deep breath... She turns back around.

LUNA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

I can't do this. I can't. I can't!

INDRA SUZUKI

Hey, Luna, don't think that. Not after I gave you that whole speech.

(trying to drag Luna)

You can't keep making excuses. And who knows, maybe they'll make the whole situation enjoyable.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Fine, but don't leave my sight for not even a minute.

INDRA SUZUKI

I don't think I had the choice in the first place.

Indra drags Luna to the front steps.

INDRA SUZUKI (CONT'D)

Didn't Sterling say there was an old man in front of the theatre?

LUNA STARLIGHT

Maybe he said that to scare you.

INDRA SUZUKI

(laughs)

Scare with me a senior citizen?

INSIDE THE THEATRE: A bustling tourist attraction filled with urban, city-folk doohickeys, standing out in a crummy, ramshackle piece of junk. They smile and snap photos like hideous ignorant rats. Luna and Indra enter the scene.

INDRA SUZUKI (CONT'D)

Woah. This place is old.

LUNA STARLIGHT

They shut down after the incident. From what I heard, it reopened three years ago.

Indra looks at Luna.

INDRA SUZUKI

Are you sure you're going to be alright?

LUNA STARLIGHT

Don't worry about it.

(checks time)

Our show starts soon. I think I remember where the reception was.

Luna and Indra check in at the reception.

RECEPTIONIST

Here is your pass. The showing starts in fifteen minutes, so you can still look around. As long you have the pass, you can go anywhere you like.

Luna and Indra walk through the left end of the theatre, towards the dress room.

LUNA STARLIGHT (VOICE OVER)

The dress room was exactly like it was all those years ago. Except now, there were cheap replicas of the outfits we once wore.

INDRA SUZUKI

Hey, Luna.

Indra points towards a pearl white dress.

INDRA SUZUKI (CONT'D)

Was this the dress you wore?

Luna mind races back to the night: “I love you...” -- GUNSHOT!

LUNA STARLIGHT

No. I mean, yes. It is. But it's just a replica. The real dress is soaked in blood.

INDRA SUZUKI

You kept it?

LUNA STARLIGHT

Let's keep moving. I think we should be able to take our seats now.

THEATRE MAIN ROOM: Luna and Indra show up to the front doors, but are stopped by Van Burgesson.

VAN BURGESSON

Good afternoon, Ms. Luna Starlight.

LUNA STARLIGHT

You recognize me?

VAN BURGESSON

It's hard not to.

INDRA SUZUKI

So much for the disguise.

VAN BURGESSON

Ah, but don't worry. This will stay a secret between us. Come, let me show you around.

Burgesson leads them towards their seat: middle of the pack, close enough to the action, but too far to notice anything specific.

VAN BURGESSON (CONT'D)

You know, I am very pleased that you came. I know it is a sensitive topic for you, but with you being here, you could give valuable input to our production team.

LUNA STARLIGHT

That sounds great, but I'd rather not revisit those memories.

VAN BURGESSON

But why not? This event made you.

LUNA STARLIGHT

What do you mean?

Burgesson stops, thinks, and takes his seat, a row in front of Luna and Indra. The rest of the visitors sat on the rows towards the left, leaving the three of them isolated.

VAN BURGESSON

(wicked smile)

Yes. While people before may have known you as a stunning actress, nowadays, people only know your unfortunate fate. Luna Starlight, the poor actress who saw her husband murdered in front of her eyes.

LUNA STARLIGHT

That's not true! People still know me as...

(turns to Indra)

That's not true, right?

INDRA SUZUKI

(on the spot)

No, I-I-uh-I don't think it is. I'm sure tons of people still know you as the great actress you were.

VAN BURGESSON

Then perhaps name one of Luna's film, Mr...?

INDRA SUZUKI

Indra.

VAN BURGESSON

Yes, Mr. Indra. Name one of her films for me.

INDRA SUZUKI

Films?

Indra chokes, then looks at Luna in guilt.

INDRA SUZUKI (CONT'D)

I can't. But that's not because of Luna. I haven't had the opportunity to watch many films. I lived in quite a rural area.

VAN BURGESSON

And how's that different from these people...

VAN BURGESSON (CONT'D)

The world of Hollywood doesn't reach them. They only know you because of the murder.

An extended pause. Three faces: Burgesson's cruel smile, Indra's face of guilt, and Luna's face of atrocity. Suddenly, the lights turn off.

VAN BURGESSON (CONT'D)

The show is starting. If at any point you'll uncomfortable, the door is open, Ms. Starlight.

Indra leans closer to Luna.

INDRA SUZUKI

Don't believe what he says. I can't name your films, but ask Vanessa. I'm sure she can name all of them in a heartbeat.

A deafening silence. Luna's breathing becomes shallow, and beads of sweat form on Her forehead. The stage lights flash on, a main spotlight pans towards a FAKE ANNOUNCER, dressed up in the same vintage style as the announcer from Luna's show, but performing a terrible impression.

FAKE ANNOUNCER

Ladies and gentlemen, the following is a re-enactment of the tragic events that took place here on August 27, 2011. The death of Shiva Starlight shook the theatrical world and caused the career of Luna Starlight, a prominent film star, to end. Note that the following is a real event and is based of true witness testimonies. While the original play consisted of three acts, lasting a total of one and a half hours, we will be beginning with the final scene of the play.

FAKE ANNOUNCER (CONT'D)

Here, the main actor, played by Shiva Starlight, confesses his love and apology towards the female lead, played by Luna Starlight.

Luna flinches when she hear her name. The curtains unfold, revealing two pathetic, two-cent actors standing on stage making a joke of an attempt to recreate the final loving scene.

FAKE SHIVA

I love you, Emily. And I'm sorry!

FAKE LUNA

Oh, dear. Why would I accept your apology? After all you did to me? Don't you think I have moved on?

INDRA SUZUKI

I thought they end up back together. Is that going to happen now... Or what?

Luna's jaw drops in disbelief.

FAKE SHIVA

I know, but please... You just have to give me a chance. I can do better.

LUNA STARLIGHT

(soft)

No. That's not what happened.

INDRA SUZUKI

Did you say something?

Burgesson turns around with a devilish smile that illuminates even in the darkness.

VAN BURGESSON

Is something the matter, Mrs. Starlight? Did we perhaps miss something? You can always correct if you like.

Luna gulps.

FAKE LUNA

Giving you one chance was already too much. Do you know what father says? He always tell me I can do better. Every time I come home, he is disappointed in me.

LUNA STARLIGHT

(slightly louder)

No... This isn't real.

FAKE LUNA

And sometimes, when I think of the life I could've had... The man I could've been with. I think he's saying the truth.

LUNA STARLIGHT

Just hurry it up and end my misery already!

Indra reaches out to Luna.

INDRA SUZUKI

Luna, are you okay? Do you need to leave? Water? Luna!

LUNA STARLIGHT

No, I'm okay.

Luna, shakes her head, but her eyes are fixated on the stage. Van Burgesson leans in closer.

VAN BURGESSON

Aren't theaters wonderful, Mrs. Starlight? They're the only place where you can mix fiction and reality.

INDRA SUZUKI

You bastard.

VAN BURGESSON

Me? I didn't create this play. I funded it. It was made by the people who witnessed it. If you have anyone to blame, it's that society.

FAKE ANNOUNCER

It was here, as police reported exactly 11:30 P.M, that a man, Algerie Fergusson, arose from the first row and fired a pistol towards Shiva Starlight.

The FAKE ALGERIE FERGUSSON rises from his seat once more, aiming the replica revolver towards the faux Shiva.

LUNA STARLIGHT

No, no, no.

FAKE ANNOUNCER

The police reports reveal that Algerie did his actions for the good of Luna.

LUNA STARLIGHT

No.

FAKE ANNOUNCER

That the real Shiva Starlight was not an innocent boy from the edges of Tampa Valley, but a hardened criminal...

LUNA STARLIGHT

No.

FAKE ANNOUNCER

That he learned to take advantage of others for his benefit and Luna was just the unfortunate girl in his path.

LUNA STARLIGHT

No... No, no.

The gunman slowly presses the trigger, the tension reaching its unbearable peak, and then....

CUT TO BLACK:

Luna's voice pierces through the darkness, a raw scream of anguish and denial.

LUNA STARLIGHT (CONT'D)

(voice tethering in trauma)

NO!

THE END.
